April 2025 Update

On April 9th, we received the following letter describing the horrific events that took place last week in Mirebalais Haiti. If you can help, we have a secure method of sending funds to our partners. They are safe and attempting to help as many as they can with food, shelter and basic supplies.

Donations may be made  by clicking on the Donate button at the bottom of this section.  Please pray for our partners in Haiti.

----

Dear brothers and sisters, dear friends and partners,

In my capacity as Partnership Program Coordinator, I send you fraternal greetings on behalf of the Diocese of the Episcopal Church of Haiti, and on behalf of all your partners throughout the country.

It is my duty, with immense pain and deep anguish, to inform you of the tragic and murderous situation currently raging in Haiti, particularly in the Centre Department. The Plateau Central, once a bastion of relative peace, has now fallen under the control of armed gangs, starting with the town of Mirebalais.

This region is now one of the country's lost territories. The situation is grave. Many people are wondering whether there is still a future for Haiti. Haiti has become a veritable human slaughterhouse. In Mirebalais, the streets are littered with corpses: children, young people, old people, men and women from all walks of life. Unspeakable scenes of terror unfold before our very eyes: stray dogs devour the lifeless bodies, while the survivors flee in panic, hoping to find refuge elsewhere.

Schools close. Churches fall silent. Streets empty. The Bas-Plateau is deserted. Families collapse, traumatized. Everyone lives in fear, watching for death like an ever-closer shadow. No one is spared. The entire population is affected, threatened and destabilized. The distress is total. People are running in all directions, looking for shelter, help, light in this thickening night.

In Cange, two criminals who came to take refuge have been arrested by the police, which only amplifies the fear and insecurity. Misery, for its part, is intensifying. Bellies are empty. Children are crying from hunger. Parents, who left without taking anything with them, are powerless to hear their children's cries. Many walk barefoot, without clothes, without food, without hope.

Today, brothers and sisters of good will are offering them a little hospitality, a little comfort, until something better comes along. But this is not enough.

That's why I turn to you, dear partners and friends. I beg you to keep the Haitian people, and particularly the inhabitants of the Central Plateau, in constant prayer, as you have so often done. But today, we need more than prayers. We need your help. Immediately. I'm launching an urgent appeal: come to the aid of children and families displaced from one community to another, without water, food or clothing.

Every gesture counts. Solidarity can save a life. Don't hesitate to contact your partners, even if communications are difficult. Your efforts, your pleas, your compassion are our last chance. Act in the name of love. Save the children. They are the future of Haiti. The future of humanity. We thank you already for your listening, your compassion and your usual faithful and pragmatic support. May God bless you abundantly for all you do in the name of Christ, our hope.

In Christ,

Father Kesner Gracia Partnership Program Coordinator

April 2022 Update

Haiti Outreach Mission Update

The atmosphere in Haiti is still very troubling.  The government, what remains, is not stable, inflation skyrockets, civil unrest, robbery and kidnappings are still occurring much too frequently.

Our brothers and sisters in Mirebalais need our help more than ever!

We have not been able to travel to Mirebalais since 2018 but we are keeping in touch with Fr. Jean Alphonse of St. Pierre Anglican Church and Fr. Romel Eustache of St. Louis Catholic church in Mirebalais.

Maintaining the water purification system that supplies clean drinking water at a fraction of the cost of other suppliers is imperative for the health of the people of Mirebalais.  This month HOM sent $1,687 for water system testing and repairs.  We also sent $3,000 to Fr. Romel for his Food and Rent programs.

The Medical/Dental Clinic notified us that the compressor of the dental instruments was no longer working which meant that our dentist was only able to do extractions.  The generator for the clinic was also breaking down frequently.  The clinic is dependent on the generator because consistent electrical power is non -existent. The interior and exterior of the building was also in desperate need of painting.  HOM sent $8,500 to replace the generator and compressor, which they were able to obtain locally, and to paint the clinic.

We have been trying to find a way to get medications delivered to the clinic.  The only shipping arrangements available are for the priest and physician to go to the customs office at the Port-au-Prince Airport.  This is not a safe trip.  They found a source of medications locally and were able to purchase them, at a much higher price than we would have paid in the US.  HOM will send $6,000 this month to pay for the medication.

Lastly, we mourn the death of Dr. Paul Farmer, founder of Partners in Health in Haiti.  His work with the impoverished around the world cannot be overestimated.  His untimely passing leaves a huge hole in the worlds of medicine and public health.  I urge you to watch Bending the Arc (available on Netflix) a beautiful film about his work with people around the world.

Thank you for supporting Haiti Outreach Mission’s work in Haiti.

Our member churches represent many cultures across the globe:  Africa, Central, and South America.  Many areas are also struggling against oppression, lack of human rights, food, and shelter scarcity.

Please pray for peace and stability for all people.

Please pray for the people of Haiti.

Please pray for peace and stability for all people.

An article excerpt from the Diocese of Michigan magazine "The Record/Episcopal Life" (volume 18, No 8, August 2007, by Herb Gunn:

"Haiti Outreach Mission combines effective outreach, sustainability..."

Haiti Outreach Mission (HOM) is a mix of clear mission, effective leadership and broad-based support. We have a strong history built on personal relationships both here and in Haiti. HOM demonstrates measurable results and consistent follow-through.

Episcopalian Roger Matthews, a member of St. David’s, Southfield, and his Roman Catholic wife, pediatrician Dominique Monde-Matthews, a member of Corpus Christi, Detroit, were married in 1998. Meeting families turned into something more when the couple traveled to Dominique’s homeland, Haiti. They went to the Caribbean nation as newlyweds and they returned engaged to the whole country. Roger Matthews recalled that they were sitting on the tarmac waiting for the plane to bring them home, staring into one another’s eyes and saying, “There must be something we can do.” Roger would later remark “From then on, my whole life changed.”

The couple initially turned to their churches for partnership. Roger accepted help from St. David’s Episcopal Church while Dr. Dominique recruited St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church - now Corpus Christi Catholic Community. They launched a mission partnership with two churches in Mirebalais, Haiti: St. Pierre Episcopal Church and St. Louis Roman Catholic Church. Haiti Outreach Mission has grown to include the partnership of three Detroit-area Roman Catholic churches and St. Bernard’s in Billings, Montana and two Michigan Episcopal churches. Member churches commit $4,000 per year to the mission. In addition, each church contributes additional fund-raising efforts.

In 2010, Dr. Dominique Monde-Matthews was leading HOM’s medical response to the devastating Haitian earthquake when she learned of the sudden death of her husband Roger in the United States. She continues to lead our efforts.

Over the years, Haiti Outreach Mission has provided; financial support and construction/repair for the schools of the two partner parishes; converted an abandoned building in Mirebalais into a health clinic; provided support for the clinic’s doctor, nurse, dentist and staff; undertaken mobile medical/dental efforts; provide fluoride treatments to school children.

MOVE THIS LETTER TO LETTERS/NEWSLETTERS

Letter from Fr Pere Alphonse on School Support:

Dear all,

I greet you in the name of the Living God. I believe that, despite the difficult situations, God keeps you alive and healthy. I thank Him so much for that.

For the past two years Port-au-Prince has become a zone with almost no government: there most parents have lost their jobs and their children can no longer go to school. Now the conditions in the Capital have become much more serious. Some of the people fleeing Port-au-Prince have come to Mirebalais with almost nothing. We provide aid. The children attend school without paying tuition and I have not yet finished paying teachers' salary for the school year 2021-2022.

There are students who come to school from far away and who do not have money to get something to eat. We have considered what to do and we would like to give the students a daily hot meal. Things are difficult for us!

We are knocking at your door. As good Samaritans could you help us do this? A child who does not eat will not be able to learn well. As the Haitian proverb says: "Sak vid pa kanppe" (a hungry belly has no ears).

Please help us! God will give it back to you a hundredfold.

Thanks already for your partnership.

God bless you!

Letter from our President:

Dear friends of Haiti,

Fr. Alphonse sent us the above letter in the fall of 2022 and re-sent it last month letting us know that conditions are even worse now.

He struggles to keep the schools open so children can learn instead of being on the streets.  He thinks that gangs recruit the young people who roam the streets.  (His letter has been edited for clarity and space.)
